Gardening in Maury County
Good News for Gardeners

Newcomers to Maury County are in for some good gardening news: The growing season lasts from about mid-April through mid-October for frost-sensitive plants‚ which gives gardeners about half the year – sometimes a little more – to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

But there are a few challenges.

Tennessee lies in a transitional zone for many plants and grasses‚ which can cause some frustration. For example‚ many area lawns are fescue‚ but summers here are a bit too hot for a great fescue lawn – and the growing season is relatively short for warm-season grasses like zoysia or Bermuda. Humidity in the summer also presents some challenges.

That said‚ the gardening picture is a positive one‚ with hundreds of plants to choose from that thrive in USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6b.

The average annual temperature is almost 60 degrees. Average January lows are 32.8 degrees Fahrenheit‚ and average July highs are 78.3 degrees.

Soil quality varies from site to site‚ so getting your soil tested before starting a project is a good idea.
